Endo means inside; Dont means tooth. The Root Canal is the small chamber or tunnel in the tooth where the nerve of the tooth is located.
If the nerve inside our tooth becomes injured, usually due to a cavity, it is possible that the nerve can be injured beyond its ability to heal. This can also happen if the tooth has been injured by a traumatic blow, a partial crack in the tooth or damage due to the grinding of teeth together.
If the tooth reaches this point which we call irreversible injury to the nerve, the tooth can still be salvaged using a treatment called a root canal treatment.
Briefly a root canal treatment means a gentle removal of the injured and infected nerve and placement of a special type of filling inside the tooth. In almost every case this can be done without discomfort.
In my career so far I have saved hundreds and hundreds of teeth that otherwise would have been lost, using a root canal treatment
One of the important parts of my job as a dentist is to stop toothaches. Root canals are one of the tools that help me do that and allow the person to keep their tooth.
